Lessons on Love from a Gen Z Encounter

I was at an event, the very rare times I do go out. At my middle age status (40s) I just find it so tiring to laugh on cue. I’m exhausted within fifteen minutes and I am scanning for the exit sign without trying to appear bored and rude.

Anyhow, I encounter this young fella who is significantly younger than me and like a true gen Z, swap instagram accounts. (I sound like a Goddamn dinosaur) as I typed that previous statement.

So there it was – a DM.

“Hello auntie. How was your day today?”

Who the fuck calls me aunty? Now I feel like a decrepit fossil. Getting back to the story …

I replied “Hello nephew, is there something I can help you with?”

“Oh yeah, have you found me a match?” this gen Z replies

“Given that I hardly know you; no.” Aunty replied

Now this kid is a smooth operator. I can see his dating game strategy.

“Why are you in such a hurry to settle down?” aunty replies again

“Because I am running out of time” gen Z replies

“How old are you” aunty replies

“26” gen Z replies

This is where I decided I was getting hoodwinked and I am no longer interested in such stupidity.

I don’t know why this kid was head long in a hurry to settle down. This is a guy in his prime and it isn’t like his biological clock is ticking, unless there is something that I don’t know about. I didn’t bother trying to find out.

Phil Collins sang in his song – “you can’t hurry love. No you just have to wait” perhaps there is much pearl of wisdom nestled in those lyrics.

All jokes aside, I could sense that the boy thinks that the secret to alleviating all of his woes is to find a woman. This is usually the beginning of all things unravelling. The foundation that is set on shaky grounds cannot sustain the storms of life.

No one can take away the ache and insecurity that we try to bury. These need to be worked through individually. There are no shortcuts to finding our authentic self.

It is a journey of discovery full of aches and pain. It’s not called a refinement process for a fancy term. It is just that.

So young nephew, find you and that girl will make herself known to you. A female is like a true thrifter. She can spot a gem amongst the junk. And if you’re a catch, the cashier till will move faster than the sound of cha-ching.

That’s all for me today. If you have made it this far, thanks for entertaining my effort. 🙂
