Life: Remembering the simpler times

Daily writing prompt
Do you remember life before the internet?

I do remember life before the internet, but that will also mean I am admitting that I am old. Well I kinda am. I am the generation where dial up internet was a real thing. Where we had to wait ages for the internet page to load up and the pixelation was all blocky.

AOL and ICQ was the desktop dating app of its time.

Those were the days. Laptops were not in vague at the time, so it meant that you didn’t have to bring work home. When you signed a contract to work 9-5, you literally worked those hours with a lunch break. It was heavenly. You actually got to chat with your colleagues.

Oh! I was also part of the myspace thingy. But I never had one. I am that technology lagger IT companies speak of. I didn’t have a facebook account until people started harassing me to get one. I still think facebook is not a great thing.

You only got a FB account so you didn’t miss out on being invited to parties. Jeez, that sounds so lame as I typed it up. Anyway, that statement is staying up.

Dare I say, there were more jobs to be had and looking for work was so much easier. Now, oh my gosh! The job market is like bedlam.

You could start work on grad pay and afford to move out (at least share a place).

When I look back on what I have just typed. I sound like an 80 year retiree who is reflecting back on her youth. But I’m not that old (yet!) I just remember the simpler times when the basics were not so hard to ascertain and having a life was not too far of a stretch.

In some ways, I do miss the days before the internet. Where people spoke to each other and friends actually called each other to gossip (ah hem) I meant chat. But life, you just have to move with the times.

And maybe life was better before the internet.

With the internet, it can do some of the thinking for you. That’s a plus on the mental load.

That’s it. That’s all I have to say.

I have no enlightening message to share about life before the internet. I was too busy giving my parents grief.

  1. There is nothing wrong with being wise, experienced and having a review of your life that makes you laugh and cry simultaneously. We can say we are not old just gold to the younger generation. You should try to get there. Besides the Internet is not that long ago. The Internet is available to ordinary people.

    • “Just gold”. I may use that in a future post. I give credit to you 🙂 The internet of yesteryear that were available to ordinary people, also made me wonder how we managed to explore the internet, given that it took a week to load a page. Anyhow, they were the “simpler” times.
